Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), a 12,000-member megachurch in Britain headed by Nigeria’s Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, lost $4.8 million to a Ponzi scheme after trustees carelessly invested money in it.
The scam was the brainchild of former Premier League soccer player, Richard Rufus, who used to be a defender for Charlton Athletic. He promised investors along with the church a return as high as 55 per cent.
Richard Rufus stole from the Ponzi scheme he created
The Christian Post reporting the findings of an inquiry published 14 December by the Charity Commission for England and Wales revealed that the Kent-based 12,000 members Christian Centre suffered a net loss of about $4.8 million (£3.9 million) after its trustees invested over $6.1 million (£5 million) in four instalments between June 2009 and June 2010 . Rufus was a member and former trustee of the church.
Rufus had guaranteed that the investments would earn a sizeable return totalling about 55 percent in a year.He was last year found guilty of defrauding about 100 investors out of a total of $10,731,159 (£8,682,343) in the £16-million investing scheme.
Kingsway International Christian Centre was the single largest investor in the scheme.
The Charity Commission said in the report, the church’s trustees handed over an initial investment and entered into an agreement in which they were guaranteed that investment would earn a profit of about 5 percent per month, with the exception of August and December when they were guaranteed profits of about 2.5 percent.
“The inquiry established that in practice, however, the investments resulted in a net loss of £3.9 million to the charity,” the report explains.
The report states that the church’s trustees who handed over the funds were guilty of “mismanagement.” The commission found that the church’s trustees did not “exercise sufficient care when making the decisions to invest £5 million of the charity’s funds through the ex-trustee’s investment scheme.”
“They did not follow all the principles expected of trustees to ensure they comply with their trustee duties under charity law when making those decisions,” the report concludes.
The Charity Commission was first alerted to the church’s investment when it found that the church made £3 million of investments with a “qualified independent trader” who was “in a position to provide the services of an investment manager by investing in financial markets.”
After the commission contacted the Financial Services Authority to verify the trustee’s status as a trader, it found that the trustee in question was not, nor had he ever been, licensed to “carry on regulated activities in a personal capacity.”
The commission also found that the investments were paid to the trustee’s personal bank accounts. Additionally, the commission found that the investments “appeared to be speculative and high risk in nature.”
As a result of the commission’s inquiry, an interim manager was appointed to review the trustees’ decisions to invest the £5 million and to decide whether any of the trustees should be held personally liable.
The interim manager found that the trustees did not do enough to investigate whether or not the rate of return they were promised was realistic and put too much trust in the trustee’s good standing with the church and community.
“The interim manager found that conflicts of interest were not managed properly by the decision-making trustees when making the decision to invest. There was too much reliance on the expertise of the ex‑trustee when he was personally interested and conflicted,” the report states.
“The interim manager found that insufficient consideration was given by the decision-making trustees as to whether the guaranteed rate of return was unrealistically high, or to the potential for fraud.”
After the church entered into an Individual voluntary agreement with the ex-trustee in hopes he could pay back the money lost, the ex-trustee filed for bankruptcy and was declared bankrupt in 2013.
The interim manager also encouraged the church’s current trustees to bring a legal claim against the trustees who decided to invest the money. (NAN)

Kuni Tyessi, Abuja
For better results in the health sector and in promoting care-giver and patient relationship for optimum results, health workers, especially doctors, nurses and midwives need better orientation in the form of capacity building and must be taught that compassion and empathy does not cost anything.
Also, pharmacies and hospitals should endeavour to break the jinx of secrecy as it relates to drugs being administered to patients, as it is their right to know the names, dosage, side effects, and other information which may be relevant to the patient in respect to usage as patients pay for services but do not get them.
This was the stand of Dr. Stella Iwuagwu, a victim of the failed health system in Nigeria and the Executive Director of Centre for the Right to Health, a non-governmental organisation, during its press conference to announce the premiere of her documentary titled ‘Failed by Angels’.
She queried that every right of the patient and the health worker has been enshrined in the constitution, but the problem was that many do not have copies to serve as guide, and those who have it do not read them to be acquainted with their health rights.
As a result of this, Iwuagwu, said patients have been abused and maltreated in hospitals with the resultant effect leading to more complications, and in severe cases, death. Adding that, even the judiciary was handicapped in interpreting the constitution as many Nigerians do not report the cases of the wrongs done to them in hospitals and as such, the vicious cycle continues with no one being held accountable.
”The laws are there but the applications are missing. If patients or their relatives don’t report or take cases to the courts, the judiciary will not be able to apply the law. So Nigerians need to know what the law says and what the National Health Act says. The legislatures have done their part to quite some extent but as it is right now, the ball is in the court of the people. We will not get anywhere until people begin to report.”
In the same vein, she called for adequate measures to be taken in cases where caregivers are found wanting on the scale of irreversible damage such as paralysis or death.
“Most of the hospitals have something on paper but lack the will for implementation. So the staff need training and retraining, especially health record holders. A certain percentage from their salaries can be taken so that there is a financial consequence especially if a court case is involved, so that they can serve as deterrents to others and they will be forced to sit up.”
“There can also be suspension. Violators can be made to loose their practising license. They can also be made to do restitution among several others. There should be consequences and every institution should have that. They need to implement those and if their law needs an update, that should be done. In developed climes like the U.S., before a doctor opens a hospital, he must have a medical malpractice insurance.

Photos: Saraki's aide reportedly missing after DSS officials ransacked his home in Abuja
President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and aide to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Imo Ugochinyere, is reportedly missing after DSS officials raided his home. His friend and associate, Steve Uzoechi, raised alarm about his whereabout via a post on Facebook. Read what he wrote below..
There is palpable fear for the life of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the National President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and aide to Senate President, Bukola Saraki following an unwarranted Gestapo-styled raid of his private office at Suit 29b Shakir Plaza by the side of Assemblies of God's church, Area Eleven, Abuja, by armed men said to be operatives of the DSS.
Just like the case of the Judges, these security men, impeccable neighbourhood sources say gained access by PULLING DOWN THE OFFICE DOOR WITH SLEDGE HAMMER.
This is urging all relevant authorities, civil society organizations and men of goodwill to call for a stop to this reign of fear, terror and impunity as audible sound of physical assault and brutality of occupants of the office have been confirmed. According to sources, the raid and beating started since 2am and is still ongoing.
It will be recalled that earlier in the year Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere was detained for over a month by the DSS with no single offence or allegation named or levelled against him by the DSS. It is time to say NO to arbitrary arrests, intimidation and detention of persons that hold contrary views. It calls for urgent intervention.
THIS IS AN S. O. S.

GUYABANO (SOUR SOP) TEA FOR CANCER, DIABETES, ARTHRITIS AND OTHER INFLAMMATORY DISEASES. COME AND LETS TALK ABOUT IT.
HOW TO PREPARE:
You will be needing 40 pcs of Guyabano leaves
1 liter clean water
NOTE: USE MATURE BUT NOT TOO OLD LEAVES. AIR DRIED LEAVES ARE BETTER THAN FRESH LEAVES BECAUSE IT CONCENTRATES THE MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF THE LEAVES MAKING IT MORE EFFECTIVE. DON'T ALSO DO SUN OR OVEN DRY BECAUSE TOO MUCH HEAT WILL COOK THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF THE LEAVES, THUS LOSING ITS POTENCY.
PROCEDURE:
1. Boil the 1 liter water in a sauce pan.
2. As soon as it boils, add the leaves and turn the heat to low.
3. Simmer it for 20 minutes. The color will turn to golden brown or just like the color of regular tea.
4. let it cool before drinking.
The tea is only good for 7-8 hours and may be refrigerated.
*GUYABANO TEA MUST BE TAKEN FOR 30 DAYS, 3 TIMES A DAY, ONE GLASS BEFORE MEALS. THE TEA IS EASILY ABSORBED IN AN EMPTY STOMACH.
*It should only be taken for 30 days. More than that, it will destroy the normal flora.
*After 30 days, have yourself checked by your doctor to examine if the disease is still there. If the symptoms is still there, taper the dose to maintenance dose.
*If the symptoms disappear before the 30 day treatment, continue taking the tea to make sure that no single sick cell is present.
30 day treatment, 3x a day, one glass 30 minutes before meals no skipping.
MAINTENANCE DOSE:
ONE GLASS OF TEA A DAY 30 MINUTES BEFORE MEALS FOR 5 DAYS EXCEPT SATURDAY OR SUNDAY. HAVE AT LEAST 2 DAYS REST PERIOD A WEEK.

North Korea May Soon Use Nuclear Weapons On US
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that the country's "nuclear warheads need to be ready for use at any time," the North Korean state news agency KCNA reported Friday.
"Under the extreme situation that the U.S. Imperialist is misusing its military influence and is pressuring other countries and people to start war and catastrophe, the only way for our people to protect sovereignty and rights to live is to strengthen the quality and quantity of nuclear power and realize the balance of power," Kim said, according to KCNA.

The news agency also confirmed the launch by North Korea of
"short-range projectiles," announced one day earlier by the South Korean
Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The U.N. Security Council voted this week to impose an array of sanctions against North Korea because of that nation's recent nuclear test and missile launch, both of which defied international sanctions.
The U.N. resolution that brought about the sanctions aims to cripple the economic factors that fuel North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Babangida Reveals Real reason Oliseh resigned....
According to Babangida, Oliseh’s resignation was not a surprise at all, because he was surprised when he found out that the NFF promised to pay Harve Renard $100,000 a month, when his own salary of N5million a month could not even be paid.
“We saw this coming. Nothing is hidden. Oliseh was reliably informed that NFF went to talk to Herve Renard to take over the job as Super Eagles coach.

“We saw this coming. Nothing is hidden. Oliseh was reliably informed that NFF went to talk to Herve Renard to take over the job as Super Eagles coach.
This is one of the things that violated the contract he signed when he became coach,” Babangida said.
“He believes his employers are not supporting him to succeed; rather, they are planning for him to fail. Especially, with the crucial game coming up in a month’s time against Egypt for the AFCON qualifier.
He feels if he is the problem, why will he be a stumbling block? Hence, his resignation.
“He resigned so that NFF can do what they want to do. With match bonuses owed, salaries not paid, camping allowances too.
The house NFF promised him has not even been secured for him. So, where will he stay when he comes to Abuja? Hotel? ”
So, many violations of his contract. No one can work like that.
NFF cannot pay Oliseh N5million but they went promising Renard $100,000. This is sad. Why won’t he not resign?”

LOPSIDED PROMOTIONS: CUSTOMS BOSS RISKS ARREST, SAY REPS
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions on Wednesday threatened to order the arrest of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), for shunning an invitation to appear before lawmakers.
The committee is investigating a petition on alleged “lopsided” promotions and posting of personnel in the NCS soon after Ali assumed the leadership of the agency last year.
The petition was sent to the House by a group, Ohanaeze Youth Vanguard.
The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, said in Abuja on Wednesday that Ali had failed to honour several invitations the committee sent to him to appear in respect of the pending petition.
Nkem-Abonta stated, “We have invited him repeatedly and he has been giving excuses.
“This is not a military era. He has now been summoned to appear before the House on March 9. If he doesn’t show up, a warrant will be issued for him to appear here.”
He observed that Ali’s conduct suggested that he was insensitive to the complaints by aggrieved Nigerians. These are Nigerians who have complained to us and it is our duty to address the issue,” he added.
The President of the Ohanaeze Youth Vanguard, Mr. Igweka Okonkwo, claimed that Ali, on assumption of duty, approved the promotions and posting of personnel in 2015 that shut out many officers of South-East extraction.
